History
Imaginary Planet was formed in the early summer of 2000 in response to a request by a local company, Gem Barcoding Inc. Gem Barcoding needed a custom web site that catered to its specific industry and included a custom built e-commerce engine to boost sales and take a leading role in their field of business. Completion of the Gem Barcoding website project lead Imaginary Planet into expanding its infrastructure and increasing services from web design to complete web design, web hosting, email hosting and server co-location solutions.

Imaginary Planet has now expanded to two data centers here in Rhode Island; a primary hosting facility in Providence and a backup facility in Warwick. With redundant fiber based backbone connections, our primary data center facility is located within 50 yards of Qwest, MetroMedia Fiber Networks, IXC, and NEON (Northeast Fiber Optic Networks) and within 1 Mile of Bell Atlantic, MCI, Sprint and Nortel. Imaginary Planet’s primary hosting facility is top of the line powered by Cisco Systems routing equipment with hardware and software based firewall capabilities, a backup Caterpiller Generator in addition to a primary power supply backed by four separate power girds and a 450KVA Liebert UPS system with 2-hour battery backup. The primary hosting facility also includes visitation access lists, digital surveillance systems, proximity access, and dedicated switched Ethernet segments for additional security.

Imaginary Planet’s infrastructure allows for managed hosting on Intel based Dell and IBM servers running Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server. We also offer co-location server solutions if your business needs fall beyond what is provided in our managed hosting packages.

Now in our fourth year of operation, Imaginary Planet is again expanding the web hosting services offered with plans of adding the stable power of Linux run servers to our server lineup. With AMD 64-bit Opteron powered IBM servers running Red Hat Linux Advanced Server, we support a range of hosting options including a turn key e-commerce hosting package for small and medium sized businesses.
